Real Property Institute of Canada (RPIC) Regional Workshop
“Modernizing
Canadian Laboratories –
A Sustainable Future
for Science and Technology”
June 22-23,
2010
Coast Plaza Hotel and Conference Centre
Calgary, Alberta
Building on the success of the first ever
Regional Workshop held in Halifax in June 2009, RPIC is pleased
to offer a second Regional event, scheduled for June 22-23, 2010
in Calgary, AB.
Recognizing the need to become a leader
in research and development with the goal of placing this country
among the
economic world
leaders, in 2007 the Government of Canada developed a new Science
and Technology Strategy entitled Mobilizing Science and Technology
to Canada’s Advantage. This strategy is focused on encouraging
a more competitive and sustainable Canadian economy with the
help of science and technology, and recognizes that governments,
universities, colleges, research institutions, businesses and
entrepreneurs will all have to contribute to make this happen.
Scientific
laboratories represent some of the most sophisticated, complex
and energy-intensive environments within our real property
holdings in all sectors and play an essential role in realizing
this strategy. Laboratories are the birthplace of scientific
discovery and new technologies, providing solutions to many
of the issues most important to Canadians, including preservation
of our environment, protection of endangered species, improvements
to health, enhancements to public safety and security and
management of our natural and energy resources.
The federal government’s
annual investment in laboratories alone is over $10B. The commitment
of the federal government
and the importance of federal laboratories was further
highlighted recently by an injection of $250M over two years
to address
existing laboratory infrastructure, made through the Modernization
of
Federal Laboratories program of Budget 2009, Canada’s
Economic Action Plan.
Through this 1-1/2 day event, you
will have access to and share world-class laboratory knowledge
and best practices,
expertise
and solutions with your colleagues and peers.
This is your
opportunity to learn how to increase laboratory asset utilization
and flexibility, to learn about sustainability
and energy-use reduction approaches and technologies,
to identify future trends and challenges in laboratory design
and operation,
and discover what benefits the principles of programs
like
Labs21® could
offer going forward, in terms of increased performance
and environmental stewardship.
In short, this Workshop
offers something for everyone involved with laboratories
in Canada.
Be sure to mark your calendar for this
important event!
