Ottawa Laboratory
Fallowfield (OLF) Tour – FULL
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
is dedicated to safeguarding food, animals and plants which
enhance the health and well-being of Canada’s people,
environment and economy. The tour of the Ottawa Laboratory
Fallowfield (OLF) will provide insight into the complexities
of maintaining and operating a level 2 and 3 bio-containment
lab. The OLF building is the main facility on the site and
contains the bio-containment labs, animal colonies, rabies
suite and bio-waste systems, as well as administrative related
spaces..
Canadian Museum of Nature’s
Natural Heritage Building Tour – FULL
The Natural Heritage Building (NHB) is
the Canadian Museum of Nature's science and administration
centre, officially opened in the spring of 1997. The building
is situated on 56 hectares of land in Gatineau, Quebec. The
facility is designed to provide the standards of safety, security
and preservation necessary to safeguard Canada's natural history
collection, which includes over 10 million specimens with an
emphasis on the plants, animals, minerals and fossils of Canada.
The building was specially designed to foster advanced collection
management and protection techniques for natural history collections.
As such, it includes many innovative features such as a carbon
dioxide bubble and walk-in storage freezers for control of
pest organisms, as well as technologically advanced electron
microprobe equipment used by mineralogy experts and other sophisticated
scientific labs.

The building offers improved workspace
configuration and security features to protect the collections
from both human and natural hazards. The collection area
has three large environmentally controlled components or "pods" that
house 42 individual collection rooms and nine documentation
rooms. The size of this area is equivalent to approximately
1 1/2 football fields. The building also includes specially
equipped dry and wet laboratories for the identification
and preservation of specimens.
Individual collections are
grouped according to their degree of susceptibility to
environmental factors and pests. Some
are isolated to provide maximum environmental protection.
Specially sealed and secured corridors surround the various
collections and labs, rendering them accessible only to
authorized personnel.
The University of Ottawa, Biology
Building
The University of Ottawa Biology Building
is a 56,000-square-foot research and teaching facility. The
facility includes 49 laboratory fume hoods and 37 biological
growth chambers. University of Ottawa staff, in collaboration
with Shore Tilbe Irwin & Partners, Teeple Architects, Coles
+ Associates, McKee Engineering, and Enermodal Engineering
designed the facility to be the most energy-efficient laboratory
building in Canada. The building achieves a remarkable 73%
reduction in energy consumption compared with standard design
practice (Model National Energy Code for Buildings). The energy
savings were independently verified by Natural Resources Canada
as the highest value seen in over 220 projects (as of September
2002).
